COL Brett Basler currently serves as the Vice Director, National Guard CIO-J6, at the National Guard Bureau in Arlington, VA. He enlisted in the 527th Engineer Battalion, Louisiana Army National Guard on 5 October 1989 and served in various platoon level positions to include a deployment to Saudi Arabia in support of Operation Desert Shield/Storm in 1991. He received his commission in August 1997 as a second lieutenant in the Engineer Corps through the Louisiana State Officer Candidate School program and was assigned to the 527th Engineer Battalion (ECB) in Ruston, LA. In 1998, COL Basler moved to Tulsa, Oklahoma and transferred to the 120th ECB of the Oklahoma Army National Guard. He completed a tour in Fallujah, Iraq (OIF2) as Company Commander of A/120th ECB during 2004-2005. COL Basler joined the federal Active Guard and Reserve (AGR) program in June, 2006 after transferring to the Signal Corps. His previous field grade assignments include Senior Army National Guard Advisor, G35, Army Cyber Command; Planner, Joint Operational War Plans Division, J5, Joint Staff; Branch Chief, Enterprise Architecture, G6, National Guard Bureau; and Chief, Information Systems, G1, National Guard Bureau.

He is a distinguished graduate of the U.S. Army War College and graduate of the Joint and Combined Warfighting School (JCWS), Command and General Staff Advanced Operations Course (AOC), Army Cyberspace Planners Course, Defense Strategy Course, Combined Arms and Services Staff School, Signal Basic Course, and the Engineer Basic and Advanced Courses. He earned a Bachelor of Science in Business Administration from Louisiana Tech University, a Master's Degree in Government Information Leadership from National Defense University, and a Master’s Degree in Strategic Studies from the U.S. Army War College. He holds several IT certifications to include Chief Information Officer and Certified Information Systems Security Professional (CISSP).

His military awards and decorations include the Bronze Star Medal, Defense Meritorious Service Medal, Meritorious Service Medal, Army Commendation Medal, Joint Service Achievement Medal, Southwest Asia Service Medal, Global War on Terrorism Expeditionary Medal, the Combat Action Badge, the Joint Chiefs of Staff Identification Badge, and Army Staff Identification Badge.

COL Basler is married to the former Domonique Kanouse of Killeen, Texas. They live in Bristow, VA and have a son, Logan (12), and daughter, Addison (9).
